Squad Selection Details
England Men have announced a 16-player squad for the initial two Rothesay Tests against Pakistan. The series is scheduled to commence at Headingley on Wednesday 19 August. This selection aims to balance emerging talent with the necessary experience to face a strong Pakistan team.
Among the notable inclusions is Dan Lawrence, who returns to the Test squad two years after his last appearance against Sri Lanka. Lawrence, currently the second-leading runscorer in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship, is expected to bat at six. National Selector Marcus North highlighted Lawrence’s exceptional season with Surrey, noting his experience, maturity, and skill as valuable additions to the middle order.
Jordan Cox, who made his Test debut earlier this summer against New Zealand at the Kia Oval, is slated to bat at three. This position became available due to an injury sustained by Jacob Bethell. Bethell suffered a right knee injury during the Metro Bank ODI series against India last month and is set to be sidelined for the entire Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan. North described Cox as one of English cricket’s most exciting talents, viewing this as a significant opportunity for the Essex wicketkeeper-batter.
Sam Cook is also part of the squad, having played one Test against Zimbabwe last summer. Brydon Carse and Ollie Pope are recalled to the Test team for the first time since the Ashes Series defeat in Australia last winter. Pope, who previously served as vice-captain, returns as a reserve batter and can cover various top-seven positions, including wicketkeeping if needed. His recall is partly attributed to his 64 caps, including five as a stand-in captain, and his team-first approach.
Leadership and Coaching
Joe Root will captain the Test team in a permanent capacity for the first time since 2022. He will lead the side in front of his home crowd at Headingley. Harry Brook is expected to serve as Root’s deputy, with Ben Duckett being another experienced player with over 25 caps available for advice during challenging moments on the field.
The new head coach, Stephen Fleming, will not take charge until after the three-match series. However, Marcus North confirmed that Fleming was heavily involved in the selection discussions, ensuring alignment with his vision for the team. North stated that it would be contradictory not to reflect Fleming’s philosophy for the side moving forward.
The enlarged squad, featuring seven fast bowlers, reflects a busy fixture schedule, with the series beginning just three days after the final of the men’s Hundred. This timing means that those participating in the competition have been increasing their workloads under the guidance of fast bowling coach Troy Cooley, and the team awaits confirmation of who will be ready for Test match play.
Player Status and Future Considerations
Sam Curran was identified as a player who could fill the void left by Ben Stokes, but he was not selected for this squad due to fitness concerns. Curran is not expected to be fully fit until the third Test. Ollie Robinson is also a potential curveball, as he and his partner are expecting their first child in the coming days. Robinson took seven wickets in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s before missing the rest of that series.
The squad selection, according to North, focuses on the present needs of the team, especially given England’s recent record of six defeats in their last eight Tests. The Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan will begin on Wednesday 19 August at Headingley.
