Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing him to the team until the end of 2030. This agreement aims to conclude speculation regarding the Dutch driver’s future, as he had been linked with potential moves to teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.
Verstappen’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028. However, it reportedly contained clauses that would have allowed him to depart at the conclusion of the current Formula 1 season if he had chosen to do so. The announcement of his extended deal coincides with his final home race this weekend, before the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is no longer on the calendar.
The 28-year-old driver expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again. This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue.” He also described the team as a “second family” and mentioned the shared “incredible moments” and four World Championships they have achieved together.
Commitment Amidst Challenges
The extension comes despite a challenging start to the current season for Red Bull, following the introduction of new regulations for cars and engines. Verstappen has voiced frustration on several occasions regarding the team’s performance, with his best results this season being two second-place finishes in the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix.
Last season, Verstappen came within two points of winning the world title, narrowly losing to McLaren’s Lando Norris. This followed a significant comeback in the latter half of the season, overcoming a deficit of more than 100 points to the championship leader.
The driver’s decision to remain with Red Bull also follows the departure of his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who is set to join McLaren by 2028. Verstappen’s contract renewal statement included praise for team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role last July after former boss Christian Horner was dismissed.
“Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen commented. He added that everyone at Red Bull’s base in Milton Keynes believes in the team’s direction and that he is looking forward to “fighting for more victories and competing for championships.”

Laurent Mekies highlighted the significance of retaining Verstappen, stating, “Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news.” He emphasized that few partnerships in sport achieve what Verstappen and Red Bull have, praising the driver’s “uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention.”
Mekies also noted that Verstappen’s impact on the team and Red Bull’s motorsport history has been transformative, and he has been fundamental to their achievements. The team principal affirmed that the decision to continue their journey is built on trust and Verstappen’s confidence in the team’s people, culture, and vision for the future.
While the new deal extends until the end of 2030, it is understood that mechanisms exist within the contract that could allow Verstappen to leave if performance expectations are not met. Such clauses are considered standard practice in F1 driver contracts, though specific details are not typically disclosed by teams.
Verstappen began his F1 career with Red Bull’s junior team, then known as Toro Rosso, in 2015. He was promoted to the senior team after four races in his second season, 2016, and immediately secured his first race victory. He has since accumulated 71 Grand Prix wins and four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 race victories, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
