Chelsea’s pursuit of experience
Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 35-year-old forward is reportedly interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal could be reached. This potential transfer signals a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, as the club looks to incorporate more experienced players into its squad.
According to reports, Chelsea’s owner, Behdad Eghbali, indicated in April that the club’s model of signing young players might need an adjustment. Welbeck, with his experience, could fit this revised approach. Manager Xabi Alonso is said to be keen on Welbeck due to his qualities as both a player and a leader.
Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension with Brighton in March, with his current deal set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season. Brighton has not commented on the ongoing discussions.
Welbeck’s recent performance and career
Last season, Welbeck played in all but one of Brighton’s Premier League games, scoring 13 goals. This marked his best league return in his career. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches for the club.
His career began at Manchester United, where he made 142 appearances before moving to Arsenal in 2014. During his time in north London, he registered 32 goals in 126 games across six seasons, followed by a year at Watford before his transfer to Brighton.
Welbeck is described as a “penalty box expert” at this stage of his career. Among players who attempted 30 or more shots in the Premier League last season, only a few had a better shot-to-goal conversion rate than his 23 per cent. Additionally, only a small number achieved a higher share of shots on target than his 50 per cent.
He is known for his off-the-ball runs and can pose a shooting threat from outside the box. His link-up play is considered effective, particularly in quick pass-and-move sequences at Brighton. Should he move to Chelsea, he would reunite with Joao Pedro, and could also create space for players like Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Impact on Chelsea’s squad and strategy
The potential arrival of Welbeck would further highlight Chelsea’s evolving transfer strategy under manager Alonso. The club has previously pursued experienced players like Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 34, and shown interest in free agent John Stones, 31, indicating a desire for more “Premier League ready” individuals.
While Chelsea recently signed Morgan Rogers, 23, who brings significant Premier League experience, the move for Welbeck would add another layer of seasoned talent. The club is also reportedly close to completing a move for defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, to further bolster their experienced options.
However, Welbeck’s potential arrival raises questions about the futures of several other Chelsea forwards. Nicolas Jackson, who has returned from a loan spell, is reportedly open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa. Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea a year ago, is increasingly expected to depart. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Emmanuel Emegha, despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.
Marc Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move. The addition of Welbeck would mean Chelsea would have an abundance of attacking options, even without European competition this season, after finishing tenth in the Premier League last term.
Since a consortium led by Todd Boehly took over Chelsea in May 2022, the club’s transfer policy has focused on acquiring young players with potential. However, the pursuit of Welbeck, along with attempts to sign Xhaka, suggests a shift towards integrating experienced players into the squad. Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick praised Welbeck a few months ago, acknowledging his sustained performance at his age.
Chelsea have signed attacker Morgan Rogers this summer and are closing in on a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix.
