France secure dominant victory over Sweden in World Cup round of 32

Kylian Mbappé at the double as France swat aside Sweden in World Cup masterclass

France advances with strong attacking display

France delivered a commanding performance in their World Cup round of 32 match against Sweden, securing a 3-0 victory. The match, played in scorching temperatures in New Jersey, saw France’s attacking prowess on full display, particularly through the efforts of Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise.

The French side, considered favourites for the tournament, faced a Sweden team that initially presented a compact and brave defence. Sweden attempted to create opportunities through counterattacks, utilising players like Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyökeres, who aimed to link up with Alexander Isak. However, defensive efforts from Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba largely neutralised these threats, preventing Mike Maignan from being seriously tested.

Despite Sweden’s early defensive efforts, France intensified their pressure around the half-hour mark. After a powerful drive from Adrian Rabiot forced a save from Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström, France began to create a series of opportunities. Mbappé saw a shot go over and another hit the post, while Olise’s scissor kick also struck the upright, with Ousmane Dembelé sending the rebound wide.

The breakthrough came when Dembelé played a short corner to Olise, who returned the pass. Dembelé then quickly moved the ball to Mbappé inside the box. Despite a tight angle and numerous defenders, Mbappé skillfully maneuvered past Gyökeres and fired a shot past Zetterström, giving France the lead just before half-time. Sweden had a chance to respond before the break, but Elliot Stroud’s follow-up shot went over the bar.

Mbappé and Olise combine for second-half goals

France extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. After Sweden lost possession, Aurelién Tchouaméni passed to Olise. Olise then delivered a precise pass between a Swedish centre-half and full-back, setting up Bradley Barcola, who ran into the box and scored by striking the ball into the roof of the net. Olise continued to be a central figure in France’s attacking play, drifting across the forward line and creating danger.

Olise secured his second assist of the match, and Mbappé his second goal, with approximately 15 minutes remaining. This goal came from another deft pass from Olise and a well-timed run by Mbappé, who curled the ball into the far side of the goal, replicating his earlier finish. This performance saw Mbappé draw level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, with both players having scored six goals in the tournament.

Mbappé’s two goals in this match also saw him become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup knockout matches, reaching a total of 10 knockout stage goals. Sweden’s Gyökeres had a late opportunity for a consolation goal but was denied by France’s goalkeeper Maignan.

Looking ahead to the next stage

France’s dominant 3-0 victory ensures their progression to the last 16 of the World Cup. Their next opponent will be Paraguay, who advanced after defeating Germany on penalties. The upcoming match is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July, with a kick-off time of 22:00 BST.

The French team’s performance against Sweden was highlighted by their effective attacking strategies and strong individual displays, particularly from Mbappé and Olise. This comprehensive win has reinforced their status as strong contenders in the tournament, as they continue their bid for a third star on their jersey.

Before this match, France had comfortably overcome Senegal, Iraq, and Norway in earlier stages of the competition, with Mbappé and Dembelé consistently performing well. Sweden’s journey to the knockout stages included a 5-1 win over Tunisia, a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands, and a draw with Japan.
