Rory McIlroy is among five players sharing the lead after the opening round of the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, is being held at The Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Scotland. Scottie Scheffler is also in contention following his initial performance.
McIlroy, making his first appearance since the US Open, recorded a five-under 65. He shares the top position with Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Højgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. This marks McIlroy’s return to the event three years after his previous victory.
Opening Round Highlights
Starting his round on the back nine, McIlroy bogeyed his first hole but quickly recovered with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 12th. He continued to gain shots on the 14th and 16th holes. Despite failing to save par on the 18th, he secured an 18-foot eagle on the par-five first hole.
McIlroy noted his strong driving performance, stating it was a continuation of what he observed at Shinnecock (US Open). He believes that consistently putting the ball in play allows him to attack courses and create scoring opportunities, which he felt he achieved in the opening round.
Cantlay completed a bogey-free round, carding five birdies. Wiesberger briefly held the sole lead before a bogey on his penultimate hole. Højgaard also reached six under par but a double-bogey on the par-four 16th impacted his progress. He finished as the best player from the afternoon wave after a birdie on the par-three 17th.
Tom Kim completed the group of five leaders, also posting a five-under 65 earlier in the day. The leaderboard is tightly contested, with 71 players separated by five strokes after the first round.

Other Contenders and Course Conditions
Among those one shot off the pace is Brooks Koepka, part of a group of seven players. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are two shots behind the leaders, in a group that includes local favourite Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark.
Scheffler is three shots behind the leaders, alongside defending champion Chris Gotterup. Scheffler’s round included four birdies and two bogeys, resulting in a two-under 68. He expressed a desire for a cleaner card and felt he could have played the par-fives more effectively.
Clark, despite a double-bogey and a bogey within his first four holes, remains within two shots of the lead. His performance at The Renaissance Club has been consistently strong in previous appearances.

The difficulty of The Renaissance Club, designed by Tom Doak and constructed in 2008, is significantly influenced by weather conditions. The course is known for its links challenge and rugged terrain, reflecting Scottish golf traditions. Historically, winning scores have varied considerably due to coastal winds.
Nicolai Højgaard, who had a challenging period with three missed cuts, showed improved form at the Travelers Championship and is looking for a strong performance in Scotland, where he has previously achieved top finishes. Jake Knapp, returning from injury, also aims to build on his improved play from the latter stages of the Travelers Championship.
Live coverage of the Genesis Scottish Open continues on Friday from 8:30 am.
