England’s World Cup Semi-Final Preparations
England are preparing for their World Cup 2026 semi-final match against Argentina, following a 2-1 victory over Norway in Miami. The upcoming fixture will take place in Atlanta on Wednesday. This match pits England against the defending world champions, who secured their semi-final spot with a 3-1 win against Switzerland.
Following the win against Norway, England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with his side’s performance, stating he was “not happy” and that England “got lucky.” When asked about these comments, midfielder Jude Bellingham responded, “Yeah, well, whatever. It’s difficult out there – it’s a tough shift.”
Harry Kane, England’s captain, addressed concerns about potential divisions within the squad. Speaking on Monday, Kane emphasized the team’s unity, stating, “The group is where we are because of our complete togetherness – not just the players, the coach and the staff. Things sometimes get made out to be more than they are.” He also defended Bellingham’s post-match comments, noting the difficulty of being questioned immediately after a demanding game.
Kane also commented on Tuchel’s managerial approach, acknowledging its difference from his predecessor, Sir Gareth Southgate. He described Tuchel as someone who “wears his heart on his sleeve” and whose unscripted communication is appreciated by the team. Kane added that the players understand Tuchel’s methods, recognizing him as “one of the best managers in the world for a reason.”
Anticipation for the Argentina Clash
The semi-final presents a significant challenge for England, as they face an Argentina side featuring Lionel Messi. Left-back Nico O’Reilly expressed his excitement for what he described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to play against the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. O’Reilly, a Manchester City defender, noted that he has not faced Messi at club level. Given his position, O’Reilly anticipates a direct defensive role against Messi if he starts.
Messi began the tournament with a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory against Algeria. The Argentina captain has since scored five additional goals, bringing his tournament total to eight, placing him joint-first with France’s Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race.
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford acknowledged Messi’s talent but cautioned against focusing solely on him. Speaking from England’s training base in Kansas, Pickford stated, “We all know how good Messi is but we also know how good Argentina are. We can’t solely rely on [stopping] Messi. We’ve got to focus on their other strengths and the weaknesses we can take advantage of.”
The rivalry between England and Argentina has a history marked by significant matches. Former Argentina player and current Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone reflected on past encounters, including the 1998 World Cup match. Simeone, who was involved in the incident that led to David Beckham’s red card in that game, described English football as “always more open, aggressive and passionate.”

Simeone recalled the 1998 match as “the best international match I’ve played in,” noting England’s performance with ten men. He also mentioned a scar from a 1991 match against Stuart Pearce at Wembley, highlighting the physical nature of these contests. The 1998 game saw Michael Owen score a notable goal, which Glenn Hoddle, England manager at the time, described as demonstrating Owen’s lack of fear.
The semi-final winner will advance to face either France or Spain in the World Cup final. France and Spain are scheduled to play their semi-final match on Tuesday. The final is set to be held at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, 19 July.
