Former England captain Heather Knight to retire from international cricket

Knight’s distinguished career

Heather Knight, former captain of England, is set to retire from international cricket following the conclusion of this week’s Test match against India at Lord’s. Knight’s career spans 16 years, during which she made a record 320 appearances for England, becoming the team’s all-time leading appearance-maker. Her decision comes as the Test against India marks the first women’s Test at the home of cricket.

Knight made her debut for England in 2010. She captained the side on 199 occasions between 2016 and 2025. A notable achievement during her captaincy was leading the team to victory at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017, which was played on home soil. She was removed from the captaincy in March of the previous year, following an Ashes tour of Australia where England was defeated 16-0 across three formats.

During her international career, Knight amassed 7,988 runs across all formats. She is ranked third among England women’s all-time top run-scorers in both the T20 and ODI formats. Knight also holds the distinction of being the first English player to score centuries in all three formats of the game, achieving her first T20 hundred in Canberra in 2020.

Reflecting on a remarkable journey

Knight expressed her gratitude for her journey as an England cricketer. She acknowledged the difficulty of stepping away from a dressing room that has been a constant in her life for 16 years. The memories, experiences, and people she encountered have significantly shaped her, and she feels content with her decision and looks forward to what comes next.

Her final international match, the Test against India, saw her add six runs to her tally on Saturday before being dismissed by Sayali Satghare. England was bowled out for 170, ending the day 269 runs behind India, who were set to resume play on Sunday with 154 for one. During her final innings, Knight scored six runs off 25 deliveries before being trapped lbw.

Knight shared that growing up in Devon and playing cricket with boys, she never imagined experiencing such a career. She feels it is fitting to conclude her career with this historic Test at Lord’s, describing her 16 years as amazing and feeling fortunate for the experience. She also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside inspiring cricketers and people who supported her throughout her career.

Legacy and future outlook

Clare Connor, the managing director of England Women, commented on Knight’s extraordinary contribution to England women’s cricket. Connor highlighted Knight’s combination of skill and determination as a player, alongside her exceptional leadership qualities. Her influence helped shape the team and the broader game during a significant period in its history.

Knight’s retirement follows that of her teammate Tammy Beaumont, who also announced earlier this week that the Test match would be her last international appearance. Both players are among the last of the group who received the initial professional contracts in the women’s game. Currently, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, and Amy Jones are the only other active players from that pioneering group.

Knight also reflected on the growth of the women’s game, stating that witnessing its development has been one of the greatest privileges of her life. She extended her thanks to all who have supported and shown love for the women’s game over the years, sharing special moments with fans. The third day of the standalone Women’s Test between England and India at Lord’s was scheduled to be broadcast live from 10:30 am on Sunday.
