England advances in netball tournament
England secured a place in the Commonwealth Games netball semi-finals following a 58-54 victory over South Africa. The win sets up a semi-final match against New Zealand, which will be a repeat of the bronze-medal match from the previous edition of the Games. The match was held in Glasgow.
The England Roses initially faced a deficit, trailing by 17-11 after the first quarter. South Africa, known as the Proteas, started strongly with Elmere van der Berg contributing significantly in the shooting circle. The early lead for South Africa put pressure on England, who knew that a defeat would mean failing to reach the semi-finals for the first time since netball was introduced to the Games in 1998.
England‘s qualification hopes had been uncertain after a 66-47 loss to Australia in an earlier Group A game. This made them slight underdogs against South Africa, a team they had lost to in a three-match series in January.
Key changes and player performances
Coach Anna Stembridge made strategic changes that proved effective. Funmi Fadoju and Halimat Adio were brought into the defence, strengthening the backline. Adio, in particular, made crucial interceptions and forced turnovers, helping to stem South Africa‘s attack. These defensive adjustments were instrumental in turning the tide of the match.
On the offensive end, Liv Tchine‘s accurate shooting combined with the efforts of Lois Pearson. Pearson maintained a perfect record, scoring 17 goals from 17 shots by the end of the game. The partnership between Tchine and Pearson was key to building England‘s lead, which stood at 43-39 at the end of the third quarter.

A significant moment in the match occurred when Khanyise Chawane of South Africa sustained an injury in the third quarter and was unable to continue. This disruption affected South Africa‘s mid-court play, allowing England to gain further momentum and eventually take the lead. England drew level at 30-30 before moving ahead.
Looking ahead to the semi-finals
The Roses displayed unity in the final quarter, avoiding turnovers and missed shots until the very last minute, securing their victory. This crucial win means England will now face New Zealand in the semi-finals. The upcoming match is scheduled for Saturday.
