Arsenal’s pursuit of Guimaraes
Arsenal has seen its initial offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes turned down. The Premier League champions are now engaged in direct discussions with Newcastle regarding a potential transfer for the midfielder. Guimaraes, who has indicated a desire to join Arsenal this summer, is currently in Spain for Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in La Manga.
Despite reports suggesting a medical had been arranged and a bid accepted, sources close to Newcastle have denied these claims, stating that no formal contact has occurred between the clubs regarding the Brazil international. Arsenal’s interest in Guimaraes is long-standing, with the player having expressed his wish to move to the Emirates Stadium.
Newcastle is keen to retain the 28-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current contract, along with a club option for a third year. Arsenal is reportedly considering whether to submit an improved offer for the player.
Club stances and financial considerations
A football expert noted that Newcastle would likely aim to secure a substantial fee from Arsenal for Guimaraes. However, Arsenal has demonstrated a reluctance to overpay for players this summer, sticking to their valuation of targets such as Guimaraes, Morgan Rogers, and Diomande.
The expert suggested that the initial bid rejection was anticipated, allowing for further negotiations between the two clubs. It is believed that Guimaraes’ desire to join Arsenal is known to Newcastle, which faces financial considerations. This situation was cited as a factor in former head coach Eddie Howe’s departure, as he reportedly anticipated Guimaraes’ eventual sale to Arsenal.
Newcastle aims to avoid a repeat of last summer’s situation with Alexander Isak. Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m. During his time with the Magpies, he has made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals.
