England’s innings at Lord’s
The second Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s Cricket Ground saw a day of competitive cricket, with neither side fully dominating. After a previous match at Headingley that was less balanced, this encounter presented a more even contest. Pakistan won the toss and chose to field, taking advantage of favourable bowling conditions. England concluded the day at 248/9.
The pitch at Lord’s offered a better balance between bat and ball compared to earlier matches, with a slow surface but none of the unpredictable movement seen in a previous Test in June. This allowed for a more measured pace of play, which appeared effective for England.
The home side’s resistance was notably led by half-centuries from Jordan Cox and Jamie Smith. Gus Atkinson also contributed with an unbeaten cameo late in the innings. Smith expressed satisfaction with England’s position, considering the conditions they faced after being put in to bat. He believes the surface holds enough for England to challenge Pakistan.
Pakistan’s attack leader, Mohammad Abbas, made an early impact, dismissing Emilio Gay for 8, Ben Duckett for 17, and Joe Root for 4 during a probing opening spell. The wicket of Duckett marked Abbas’s 900th in his first-class career, with many of those wickets taken during his County Championship stints. Abbas commented on Lord’s being his favourite ground and noted how the slope assists his bowling.
Mohammad Ali also contributed to Pakistan’s efforts, notably dismissing Harry Brook. Despite some early troubles for England, Cox and Dan Lawrence built a partnership of 43 runs. Their stand was broken by a run-out, with Shan Masood, who had previously dropped Lawrence, securing the dismissal of Lawrence for 17.

After a period without boundaries, Jamie Smith broke the dry spell with an edge. Cox reached his half-century from 88 balls, followed by Smith’s 50 from 63 deliveries. Their partnership of 67 was eventually broken when Cox was caught at second slip, with Salman Agha taking the catch after coming on for Imam-ul-Haq. Smith was then bowled by Ali, who also later dismissed Ollie Robinson.
Pakistan’s fielding, however, had some moments of concern, including two dropped catches and nine no-balls, despite an otherwise strong day. Abbas later cleaned up Jofra Archer before fading light brought an early end to play at 10-past-six, much to the crowd’s dissatisfaction. Pakistan will be looking to build on their encouraging start with the bat in the upcoming days.
