Liverpool are reportedly nearing a season-long loan agreement for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. The deal for the 27-year-old centre-back is understood to include an option for Liverpool to make the move permanent next summer. Araujo is expected to join the Liverpool squad this weekend.
This potential signing comes as Liverpool seeks to bolster its defensive options. The club recently saw Ibrahima Konate depart for Real Madrid on a free transfer. Additionally, Liverpool is currently facing a defensive injury crisis, with several key players sidelined.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed
Manager Andoni Iraola‘s side has been impacted by injuries to defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez. Gomez has a muscle injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks, making his availability for the start of the season unlikely. Jacquet, who joined Liverpool this summer after a deal was agreed six months prior, has been experiencing discomfort and has not been involved in pre-season due to a minor issue, following a serious shoulder injury that kept him out since February.
Another long-term absentee for Liverpool is Giovanni Leoni, who is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained last September. These absences mean that captain Virgil van Dijk has been the only fit senior centre-back available at times. During the recent pre-season tour of America, Iraola had to rely on teenage centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, with full-back Luke Chambers also deputising in the central defensive role.
Iraola had previously expressed concerns about the squad’s defensive depth, acknowledging the need for reinforcements. The addition of Araujo, who can also provide cover at right-back, would address some of these concerns, especially with Conor Bradley sidelined by a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for the opening months of the 2026-27 season.
Araujo’s Background and Barcelona Stance
Araujo has been a significant figure at Barcelona, having made over 200 appearances for the club since joining from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018. He has contributed to Barcelona winning La Liga in three of the last four seasons and served as club captain last season. Despite being under contract until 2031, he made only 11 league starts last season, with Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi often preferred as the central defensive pairing.
Reports suggest that Araujo‘s potential departure from Barcelona follows a recent meeting with manager Hansi Flick. Flick reportedly indicated that he planned to maintain the same defensive system as last season, which would mean Araujo would receive playing time but not a central role. This development led to the rapid emergence of the Liverpool option, with the deal reportedly finalised within a day. Liverpool is understood to have agreed to cover the player’s wages, and Araujo‘s agent travelled to meet with Barcelona‘s sporting director Deco.
For Barcelona, Araujo‘s departure could create more flexibility for signing and registering players. However, it also leaves the club with fewer options in central defence, a position where Flick had reportedly placed a freeze on new signings. This situation may prompt Deco and Barcelona to re-enter the transfer market for defensive reinforcements.
Araujo was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad for this summer’s World Cup, though he did not make an appearance as the nation exited at the group stage. He was also granted indefinite leave by Barcelona at the beginning of December, returning to the team at the end of January.
This move would mark Liverpool‘s second signing of the Iraola era, following the earlier arrival of Spanish forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5million. Liverpool is reportedly still open to further business, with Iraola keen to add at least one more winger, amid links to Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahima Mbaye. Talks are said to have opened for Barcola, but the £145m valuation from the French club remains a sticking point.
The potential arrival of Araujo offers Liverpool an experienced defender who has played at a high level since 2019. His ability to cover at right-back is also seen as beneficial given the current injury situation with Bradley. Liverpool reportedly has confidence in the future progression of younger defenders like Jacquet and Leoni, but the immediate need for an experienced stopper is clear. Araujo‘s expected arrival this weekend will provide Liverpool with much-needed defensive depth.
