First-Half Struggles for Rangers
Rangers faced a challenging night in Poland, as defensive errors led to a 2-1 defeat against Jagiellonia Białystok in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie. Despite an early lead, Derek McInnes’ side struggled to maintain control, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.
The visitors initially took the lead through an own goal by Guilherme Montoia, who inadvertently diverted Tuur Rommens’ low cross into his own net. However, this advantage was short-lived, as Kajetan Szmyt quickly capitalised on defensive vulnerabilities.
Szmyt scored his first goal when his cross from the left evaded everyone and found its way into the far post past goalkeeper Ivor Pandur. Just 10 minutes later, Szmyt doubled his tally, following up on a strong initial save from Pandur after a counter-attack that began deep in Jagiellonia’s half. The move originated after Thelo Aasgaard’s attempted flick was intercepted.
Further defensive issues were evident when a miscommunication between Dujon Sterling and Emmanuel Fernandez presented Jagiellonia with an opportunity for a third goal. Rodrigo Conceicao, however, shot wide instead of passing for a more certain finish.
Manager Derek McInnes acknowledged the team’s performance, stating, “I just felt we beat ourselves, to be honest.” He noted the initial good start but highlighted that the team “stopped doing what was working for us,” leading to “two mistakes for the two goals.”
Second-Half Improvements and Missed Chances
Rangers showed significant improvement in the second half, largely due to three half-time substitutions. Cammy Devlin, Findlay Curtis, and Nicolas Raskin were introduced, providing a more stable foundation for the team.
Despite the improved performance, Jagiellonia still posed a threat, with Szmyt nearly completing a hat-trick with a shot directly at Pandur. Jesus Imaz also had an attempt go wide after another swift counter-attack from the hosts.
Rangers finished the match strongly, creating several opportunities to equalise. Ross McCrorie had a powerful shot well blocked, while substitute Lawrence Shankland’s effort was smothered from close range. In stoppage time, Curtis rattled the post with a volley, coming close to levelling the score.
Curtis, a 20-year-old Scotland winger, was particularly influential after coming on, making smart runs and helping to move the ball through the lines. He connected with Raskin for a volleyed attempt that went narrowly wide, demonstrating his willingness to take shots on goal.
The second-half display contrasted sharply with the first, with Rangers appearing more assured and capable on the ball once the game became more open. The team’s next challenge will be to combine this improved performance with consistent control.
Upcoming Fixtures
Rangers will now turn their attention to domestic competition before the return leg. They are scheduled to face Hibernian at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday. Following this, the team will host Jagiellonia for the second leg of the Europa League qualifier on Thursday.
The performance of the half-time substitutes, particularly Devlin, Curtis, and Raskin, has put them in contention for starting spots in the upcoming home match against Hibs. The status of Nicolas Raskin remains a point of speculation amid ongoing reports.
