Early lead lost in Poland
Rangers suffered a 2-1 defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok in Poland during the first leg of their Europa League third qualifier. The match saw Derek McInnes’ first European fixture as manager of the Gers. The Scottish side initially took an early lead, but defensive errors ultimately cost them the advantage.
The opening goal came just four minutes into the game when Jagiellonia Bialystok defender Guilherme Montoia inadvertently turned a cross from Tuur Rommens into his own net. This provided a promising start for Rangers, who had winger Daisuke Yokota, signed from Hannover, making his debut.
However, Jagiellonia Bialystok quickly responded. Kajetan Szmyt equalised in the 13th minute with a goal that was described as preventable. Eight minutes later, Szmyt scored his second, capitalising on further defensive lapses from the visiting team. This left Rangers trailing by one goal at the half-time whistle.
Second-half improvements and missed opportunities
At the start of the second half, McInnes made three substitutions, bringing on Cammy Devlin, Nico Raskin, and Findlay Curtis for Dan Neil, Tochi Chukwuani, and Yokota. These changes appeared to shift the momentum of the game, with Rangers dominating possession and creating more attacking opportunities.
Despite their improved performance, Rangers were unable to find an equaliser. Devlin was set up by Mohamed Diomande in the 59th minute but was crowded out. Moments later, Curtis narrowly missed with a volley following a delivery from Raskin. Devlin’s shot from 20 yards was tipped over by Jagiellonia Bialystok goalkeeper Slawomir Abramowicz, but the resulting corner did not lead to a goal.
The home side also had chances in the second half, with Jesus Imaz missing the target from 12 yards in the 68th minute. Abramowicz made another save from a Curtis shot, and the Rangers substitute later hit the post with a volley in added time. Despite a strong finish, Rangers could not secure a leveller.
The match was marked by several defensive errors from Rangers. For example, Emmanuel Fernandez slipped in front of goal during Jagiellonia Bialystok’s second goal, and Dujon Sterling gave the ball away, leading to another chance for the opposition. Rangers manager Derek McInnes commented that his team “beat ourselves” and made “two mistakes for the two goals.”
Looking ahead to the return leg
The result means Rangers will need to overturn a one-goal deficit in the return leg at Ibrox next week to progress in the Europa League. The team’s performance in the second half, particularly after the substitutions, showed a more assured display compared to the first 45 minutes.
Supporters planning to attend the away fixture were advised to gather at Kościuszko Market Square and use shuttle buses operating between the city centre and the stadium. Thorough searches and ID checks were in place, with details on ID needing to match those on match tickets. Access to the away section involved climbing approximately 60 stairs, and a post-match holdback of up to 45 minutes was expected.
Before the second leg against Jagiellonia Bialystok, Rangers are scheduled to face Hibernian at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
The return leg against Jagiellonia Bialystok is set to take place on Thursday at 19:30.
