Villa strengthens squad with Garnacho loan
Aston Villa have confirmed the season-long loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The deal includes a conditional obligation for Villa to purchase the player permanently. Garnacho’s arrival marks the fourth summer signing for Aston Villa, following the additions of Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Kaba Cisse.
Garnacho, who joined Chelsea last August from Manchester United in a deal reportedly worth £40m, struggled to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge. Despite featuring in 43 games across all competitions and scoring eight goals, his performances did not consistently impress. He will wear the No 17 shirt at Villa, the same number he wore for Manchester United and Argentina.
The winger’s departure from Chelsea was prompted by new manager Xabi Alonso’s inability to guarantee him regular playing time. Garnacho did not report for Chelsea’s pre-season training, as his exit was being finalised. Reports indicated interest from other Premier League clubs, as well as teams in Italy and a potential move to Saudi Arabia, before his move to Villa Park.
Transfer dynamics between Villa and Chelsea
The transfer of Garnacho continues a series of dealings between Aston Villa and Chelsea. Earlier this week, Morgan Rogers moved to Stamford Bridge in a £117m deal, which is a British-record transfer fee. This follows previous transfers such as Carney Chukwuemeka’s sale to Chelsea in 2022, Omari Kellyman’s sale to Chelsea in 2024, Ian Maatsen heading to Villa in 2024, and Axel Disasi’s loan to Villa in 2025.
The structure of Garnacho’s loan deal, with a conditional obligation to buy, is understood to be a mechanism to navigate financial regulations. Both clubs have recently faced fines from UEFA for breaching financial sustainability rules. Chelsea, for instance, entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA and remains subject to stricter financial guidelines, even without European competition this season.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.” The conditional obligation to buy is considered easily achievable by Chelsea, with the total package, including the loan fee, reportedly meeting Chelsea’s valuation, which was understood to be around £42.6m.
Financial considerations and squad building
The transfer dealings between Aston Villa and Chelsea are also influenced by financial regulations. Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from UEFA for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025. A portion of this fine, £12.9m, is suspended, contingent on the club significantly decreasing its squad-cost ratio in 2026. This also includes restrictions on registering new players for the upcoming Champions League season.
The profit generated by Villa from the sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea is expected to help the club comply with both UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. The loan-with-obligation-to-buy structure for Garnacho is designed to ensure a permanent sale while avoiding issues with UEFA’s rules regarding player exchange transactions, which could reduce Villa’s calculated profit if two transfers are deemed a single transaction.
Other player movements have also occurred this summer. Youri Tielemans departed Villa for Manchester United after his £35m release clause was triggered. Additionally, Chelsea sanctioned the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for an initial £47.4m and confirmed the £48m departure of Andrey Santos to Manchester United. Nicolas Jackson has returned from his loan spell at Bayern Munich and will be assessed by Xabi Alonso during the club’s tour in Asia.
Garnacho was named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection but did not make the final squad for this summer’s World Cup. His move to Aston Villa provides an opportunity to revitalise his career after a challenging period at Stamford Bridge.
