De Zerbi’s stance on Bergvall’s future
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has addressed speculation surrounding the future of midfielder Lucas Bergvall during the club’s tour in Sydney. De Zerbi stated his desire for the 20-year-old Swedish international to remain with the club, but emphasised that he would not compel any player to stay if their spirit was not aligned with the team’s objectives. This comes amidst reports linking Bergvall with potential moves to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
During a press conference at Allianz Stadium, De Zerbi indicated that while Bergvall had not explicitly requested a transfer, he would not try to persuade him to stay. Despite the ongoing transfer discussions, Bergvall was included in the starting lineup against Sydney FC in the Sydney Super Cup, demonstrating De Zerbi’s intent to utilise him.
De Zerbi highlighted Bergvall’s potential, describing him as a “potential top, top, top player.” However, he stressed that Tottenham is a significant club regardless of his presence and that players should not need convincing to be part of the squad. The manager also pointed to the strong competition for places within the team, noting the need for a robust squad of 22 to 24 players, especially given the injuries suffered in recent seasons.
The manager confirmed that he had spoken with Bergvall multiple times, including before the end of the last season and during the World Cup, and more recently face-to-face. De Zerbi explained that he needed time to understand the characteristics of his players and expressed his wish for Bergvall to stay, calling him a “very young, very good player, good guy.”
Competition for places and player development
De Zerbi also touched upon Bergvall’s desire for playing time and his preferred role as a double pivot. The manager made it clear that he cannot guarantee a starting position for any player, stating his commitment to honesty and clarity with his squad. He reiterated that he does not want to make an initial mistake by offering false assurances regarding playing time or position.
The club has made several new signings, including midfielders Matheus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, who joined for a combined fee. These additions, along with others like defender Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, aim to strengthen the squad and provide depth. The increased competition could impact Bergvall’s prospects at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
When pressed further on Bergvall’s situation, De Zerbi concluded by saying, “I would like that he stays. I would like that he stays, but if he doesn’t want, then what can I do? Nothing.” He suggested that if Bergvall wished to leave, he would need to discuss it with Vinai Venkatesham or Johan Lange, emphasising that the right spirit is essential for players to remain with the club. De Zerbi added that the situation would become clearer in the coming weeks.
During the match against Sydney FC, another young player, Luca Williams-Barnett, made an impression after coming on in the second half. De Zerbi spoke highly of Williams-Barnett, describing him as a “precious diamond” who needs careful management to improve his decision-making and physical strength. The manager expressed his belief that Williams-Barnett is a “potential special player” and noted his practice of giving time to young talents throughout his career.
De Zerbi also clarified that some first-team players who did not feature in the match were not being rested but were not yet ready to play. He indicated that these players might also be unavailable for the upcoming match against Chelsea.
