Gomez Injury Confirmed
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to miss the beginning of the Premier League season after sustaining a muscle injury. The injury occurred less than 10 minutes into the club’s first pre-season friendly against Sunderland, a match Liverpool won 4-2. Head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed the setback, noting that Gomez complained immediately after the incident.
Iraola, speaking in Chicago after Liverpool‘s victory over Wrexham in New York, indicated that Gomez would be out for several weeks. While a typical recovery period for such a muscle injury is around one month, this timeline could vary. The coach stated that it would be impossible for Gomez to participate in the start of the season due to the short timeframe remaining before the campaign commences.
The injury to Gomez has highlighted concerns regarding Liverpool‘s defensive options. With Giovanni Leoni still sidelined and Virgil van Dijk not having joined the pre-season tour, the team has had to rely on younger centre-backs. Gomez remains with the squad in Chicago despite his injury.

Defensive Concerns and New Additions
The absence of key defenders has led Iraola to utilise younger players in central defence. Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, both 18 years old, have featured in these positions. Iraola acknowledged that the team is “pretty thin” in the centre-back role, particularly after Gomez’s early departure in the friendly against Sunderland.
In more positive news for Liverpool, Jérémy Jacquet is expected to make his debut soon. Jacquet, a summer signing from Rennes, was acquired for an initial £55m. He was initially left out of earlier matches as a precaution, having had several months without playing, but is anticipated to feature before the pre-season tour concludes with a match against Leeds United in Chicago.
The defensive situation is further complicated by other absences. Ibrahima Konaté joined Real Madrid, and Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury. This places considerable responsibility on Van Dijk for the upcoming season. The club’s strategy has included recruiting young central defenders for the future, such as Talla Ndiaye, a £1m signing from Amitié, and Ndukwe, a £2.5m transfer from Austria Vienna.

Pre-Season Performances and Squad Integration
Despite the defensive challenges, Liverpool secured a victory in Iraola’s first game against Sunderland in Nashville. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas in the second half contributed to the win. The match also saw lively performances from younger players like Calum Scanlon, Kieran Morrison, and Koumas.
Iraola expressed satisfaction with the composure and solidity shown by the team’s young centre-backs against Sunderland and Wrexham. He noted that players like Luke Chambers, who is not a natural centre-back, also performed well when deployed in that position. The integration of senior players who had less training sessions is also progressing, with expectations that they will be ready to play their first minutes soon.
Several players, including Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak, joined the squad after the Sunderland match, having been granted extra time off following the World Cup. These players did not participate in the match against Wrexham in New York City. Liverpool is scheduled to face Leeds in Chicago on Sunday, August 2.
