Manchester United strengthens midfield with Baleba acquisition
Manchester United has completed the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal valued at £70m. The agreement includes an initial payment of £65m, with an additional £5m in potential add-ons. Brighton has also secured a sell-on clause as part of the transfer.
Baleba, who is 22 years old, has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for an additional year. He expressed his excitement about joining what he described as the club of his dreams and the honour of playing at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player.

The acquisition of Baleba follows Manchester United‘s recent 2-0 defeat by Hull City in the opening match of the Premier League season. This match saw Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans make their midfield debuts for the club. United had previously attempted to sign Baleba last year but were deterred by Brighton‘s valuation at the time.
Baleba’s move increases United‘s summer spending to £153m as the club prepares for its return to the Champions League. His signing is intended to address a perceived lack of physicality and power in the midfield, despite the earlier arrivals of Santos and Tielemans.
Baleba’s attributes include strength in possession, quick ground coverage, aerial ability, and awareness of danger. He brings three years of top-flight experience in England, having joined Brighton from Lille in 2023. This experience is seen as an advantage over Santos, who is also 22 years old.

His offensive contributions included an average of 6.7 progressive carries per 90 minutes, with 2.9 of these carries covering at least 10 metres. Baleba’s athleticism is evident in his top speed of 34.5km/h in 2024-25 and an average of 8.2 defensive actions per 90 minutes.
While his passing profile suggests he may not be the primary midfielder to dictate possession, his skills are seen as complementary to United‘s existing options. He could provide defensive security and the ability to drive through midfield, potentially allowing Tielemans to focus more on progressive distribution.
A partnership with Kobbie Mainoo could see Baleba take on more ball-winning and ground-covering responsibilities, while a pairing with Santos might grant him greater freedom to operate box-to-box. His versatility is further demonstrated by his positioning last season, where he spent 88% of his minutes as a defensive midfielder and 12% in central midfield.
United‘s common defensive formation under Carrick last season was a 4-2-2-2, which accounted for 55.9% of their out-of-possession shapes. Baleba’s dynamism is expected to be valuable in such a system, where central midfielders are tasked with defending large spaces and preventing counter-attacks.
Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton‘s pre-season training camp in Austria. He made 112 appearances for Brighton, scoring four times, and featured in 31 Premier League matches last season as the club finished eighth and qualified for the Conference League.
