Chelsea secures Morgan Rogers in significant transfer
Chelsea has completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a fee of £117m. The attacking midfielder has agreed to a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and underwent a medical in London. Rogers returned from the United States after participating in the World Cup with England.
The move represents a significant acquisition for Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, who was appointed in May. Rogers was a key player for Aston Villa, contributing 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions last season, helping the club reach the Champions League and win the Europa League. He also featured prominently for England at the World Cup, starting on the right wing in the semi-final against Argentina and setting up the opening goal.
Chelsea had been monitoring Rogers for over two years, identifying him as a top attacking target. The club moved swiftly to secure the deal following England’s semi-final defeat. The transfer was finalised through a combined effort involving the club’s sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali. The strong relationship between Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris was instrumental in concluding the agreement.
Arsenal had also shown interest in Rogers and had contacted Villa. However, they were unwilling to match Chelsea’s offer, adhering to their own valuation of the player. Arsenal is now reportedly considering alternative targets, including Paris St-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.
Squad integration and financial considerations
The arrival of Rogers is expected to be eased by his existing connections within the Chelsea squad. He knows Levi Colwill and Reece James from the England setup. Additionally, Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia, and Liam Delap all came through the Manchester City academy system, where Rogers also spent time. Rogers and Cole Palmer, who were both 16 when they first became friends at Manchester City, also have a close relationship.
Rogers’ versatility allows him to play in various attacking roles. One source suggests he will primarily operate on the left, with Palmer playing centrally as a number 10. This setup would see Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, and new signing Geovany Quenda competing for positions on the right wing, with Jamie Gittens as an understudy. Alonso is exploring several tactical options, including a back-four and a back-three system, which could allow Palmer and Rogers to play together as dual number 10s.
The £117m fee for Rogers, coupled with the £47m spent on full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, represents a significant outlay for Chelsea. The club is also anticipating the potential arrivals of defenders Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano and Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, as well as midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.
To balance their finances and comply with financial regulations, Chelsea has been active in selling players. They generated over £120m from the sales of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos to Manchester United, Tyrique George to Everton, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Bromwich Albion. The club aims to sell or loan out at least a dozen players from their 37 senior options to maintain healthy accounts.
Other transfer movements and club strategies
Aston Villa, having sold Rogers, is expected to reinvest the funds into their squad. They had initially signed Rogers for £7m plus £8m in add-ons from Middlesbrough in January 2024. Villa has also sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and is anticipated to finalise a deal for Lucas Digne to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The transfer of Rogers makes him the most expensive English player, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Chelsea’s acquisition of Rogers also marks a shift in their transfer strategy, focusing on more ready-made players to elevate the project to the next level, as stated by co-owner Behdad Eghbali.
In other transfer news, Roma has submitted an offer of £39m to West Ham for winger Crysencio Summerville. The Netherlands international has attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Fulham. West Ham’s position on the offer remains to be seen, especially after Jarrod Bowen committed his future to the club following their relegation to the Championship.
Chelsea’s financial situation has seen improvements, resulting in a £2.6m fine from Uefa this summer for breaching regulations, a significant reduction from the £26.7m fine received last summer, with most of the current amount potentially waived if financial improvements continue.
The club finished in 10th place last season and will not be participating in European football, with a maximum of 51 matches possible if they reach both domestic cup finals.
