Real Madrid Pursues Diomande Amid Competition
Real Madrid has entered discussions with RB Leipzig regarding a potential transfer for winger Yan Diomande. This development comes after the Ivory Coast international was reportedly a preference for Paris Saint-Germain, though PSG has not yet offered a fee that would persuade Leipzig to consider a sale. Diomande’s situation has changed with Madrid’s interest, creating competition for his signature.
Reports indicate that Madrid has been looking for a player for an attacking right-sided position. Head coach Jose Mourinho and the club consider Brahim Diaz a valuable asset, but Madrid is actively working on a deal for Diomande.
Diomande’s Impact and Market Value
Diomande’s market value has reportedly increased significantly after just one season in the German league. Leipzig acquired him for 20 million euros in the summer of 2025, and his current market value is estimated to be around 90 million euros, with his actual transfer fee potentially higher. Earlier in the summer, Liverpool made an approach for Diomande, valued close to €100million (£86.8m; $115m), but this offer was rejected.
Leipzig has been holding out for a fee closer to €130million and is also attempting to secure Diomande, whose current contract extends through the 2029-30 season, with a new deal. The club’s managing director of sport, Marcel Shafer, has stated that their clear intention is for Diomande to play for RB Leipzig next year, hoping he remains beyond the September 1 transfer deadline.

Diomande was a key player for the Ivory Coast national team at the 2026 World Cup, where he delivered impressive performances. He also played a significant role in Leipzig’s return to the Champions League, earning the best rising player prize for the 2025-2026 season from the DFL. He beat Hamburg’s Luka Vuskovic and Bayer Leverkusen star Ibrahim Maza for the award.
Playing Style and Potential Fit at Real Madrid
Diomande is known for his ability to thrive on the left wing, cutting in on his right foot, and is considered a constant threat in one-on-one duels due to his individual skill. During the 2025-2026 German league season, he attempted more dribbles than any other player and had the highest success rate in individual duels, at a 55% success rate. He excels at creating numerical advantages near the opponent’s box and is noted for his expected assists and key passes, in addition to his goal threat.
While crossing is an area where he may fall short, his impact in carrying the ball forward and creating chances makes him an influential winger across all phases of attacking play. For a club like Real Madrid, which does not rely on a traditional striker, this perceived shortcoming might not be an issue. His contributions to pressing after losing possession, a role in which he excelled under coach Ole Werner, are likely to suit Mourinho’s defensive demands.

His prodigious dribbling ability became evident during his time at Leganes, which led to his move to RB Leipzig last July.
He has scored three times in 14 appearances for Ivory Coast, contributing to his country’s progress from a group including Germany and Ecuador at the World Cup.
