West Ham have reached an agreement with Al Hilal for the transfer of Netherlands international Crysencio Summerville. The deal is understood to be worth a total package of £60m, comprising £55m guaranteed and an additional £5m in potential bonuses.
This agreement follows a rejected offer from Roma for Summerville, which was reportedly around £39m (€46m). The Serie A club’s proposal was turned down on Monday, with news of Al Hilal’s subsequent bid emerging on Tuesday afternoon. The Saudi club’s offer, which was nearly double Roma’s initial bid, was swiftly accepted by West Ham.
Roma reportedly does not intend to increase their bid to match Al Hilal’s offer and is now exploring alternative targets. Among the players reportedly being considered by Roma are Antonio Nusa and Andreas Schjelderup, both Norway World Cup stars.
Summerville’s Impact and Future
Should the transfer be finalised, Summerville’s sale would rank as the third-highest in West Ham’s history. Only the transfers of Declan Rice and Mateus Fernandes have generated higher fees for the club. West Ham, who were relegated to the Championship, are set to raise over £150m this summer from the sales of Summerville and Fernandes once this deal is completed.
Summerville played 34 times for West Ham during the 2025/26 season, where he scored seven goals and provided five assists. He then participated in all four of the Netherlands’ matches at the 2026 World Cup, contributing two goals and two assists during the tournament.
The 24-year-old winger had also attracted interest from other clubs, including Manchester United. However, discussions with United did not progress beyond initial exploratory talks. Any potential move for Summerville to Manchester United was contingent on the sale of Marcus Rashford this summer.
West Ham’s Transfer Activity
West Ham has been active in the transfer market following their relegation. The club has seen several players depart, contributing to their summer earnings. Mateus Fernandes was sold to Tottenham for £85m, and Callum Wilson moved to Brentford on a free transfer. Krisztian Hegyi also left the club for Sparta Prague for an undisclosed fee.
In terms of arrivals, West Ham has brought in Keiber Lamadrid from Deportivo La Guaira for an undisclosed fee. The club’s willingness to sell Summerville was partly due to their relegation to the Championship, provided they received a suitable offer for the player who has three years remaining on his contract.
Manchester United’s interest in Summerville was tied to the uncertain future of Marcus Rashford. Rashford’s relationship with United had reportedly deteriorated, leading to loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Despite an uneasy truce, United’s preference remains to offload the 28-year-old forward, who has two years left on his £17.5m-a-year contract, either through a sale or a loan. The challenge for United lies in finding a club capable of affording Rashford.
United has also been active in strengthening their midfield, having already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined initial fee of £82m. The club is reportedly still looking to add a third midfielder, with manager Michael Carrick said to admire players such as Roma’s Manu Koné, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga. However, the asking prices for these players, ranging from £60m to £80m, make such moves appear unlikely.
