A large-scale police operation involving 500 officers has led to multiple arrests at the headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe on April 29, 2026. The operation follows serious allegations concerning sexual offences, forced marriage, and modern slavery.
In total, approximately 150 individuals reside at the AROPL headquarters, a former orphanage known as Webb House. Among them are 56 children, who are reportedly home-schooled. The investigation is focused on individual suspects rather than the religious group as a whole.
The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (AROPL) relocated its headquarters from Sweden to the UK in 2021. Since then, it has attracted an estimated 7,000 people who have had contact with the movement. However, allegations surfaced regarding one victim—a woman who was a member of the group—pointing to incidents that occurred in 2023.
The police operation not only aims to address these grave accusations but also to ensure the safety of residents. Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley stated, “This is not an investigation into the religion; this is an investigation into the serious allegations which have been reported to us.” The police are coordinating with local partners to implement safeguarding measures for those living at Webb House.
The suspects involved include men and women from various nationalities including American, Mexican, British, German, and Spanish backgrounds. This diverse representation underscores the international dimensions of AROPL’s outreach.
Key facts about the operation:
- The raid involved around 500 officers from Cheshire Police.
- AROPL began its activities in Iraq and is now active across 40 countries.
- The alleged offences relate specifically to one victim within the group.
In response to inquiries regarding their involvement, AROPL’s lawyers asserted that any wrongdoing is “vehemently denied.” As investigations continue, officials have not disclosed any specific timeline for further developments. The focus remains on ensuring justice while safeguarding vulnerable individuals within the community.
