“We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan,” Brian May lamented after the Elstead Parish Council denied his proposal to plant daffodils in the heart of his community.

The decision, made during a council meeting on April 20, has left many local residents disappointed. May, known for his engagement with the community and his previous successful initiative where he donated 3,000 daffodil bulbs to St James’ Church, had envisioned a vibrant display of flowers enhancing the village green.

However, the council cited safety concerns regarding sight lines for traffic as the primary reason for their rejection. “Apparently the main objection is that the sight lines on the green will be affected for traffic,” May commented, expressing confusion over how 18-inch daffodil stalks could obstruct views.

The village green serves as a cherished open space, frequently utilized for community events and gatherings. Residents have voiced their support for floral enhancements, yet the council emphasized its duty to balance these initiatives with safety and accessibility.

The council acknowledged that many were looking forward to the daffodil planting. “We fully understand that this will be disappointing,” a representative stated. They did suggest alternative locations for planting, but May declined these options.

This isn’t the first time May’s floral ambitions have faced challenges; last year’s attempt resulted in unexpected bright yellow blooms due to a supply error. Despite this setback, he remains committed to engaging with Elstead villagers.

While the immediate future of his daffodil initiative is uncertain, May indicated he may revisit his plans at a later date. With 3.6 million followers on Instagram, his advocacy for community beautification continues to resonate beyond Elstead.
