Major budget airlines in the UK are gearing up for a robust summer, with Jet2 reporting a 6.2% increase in passenger bookings compared to previous years, despite ongoing concerns over jet fuel shortages linked to the Middle East crisis.

EasyJet has confirmed its commitment to operating a full schedule across its network this summer, assuring travelers that their holidays will proceed as planned. “Our operations remain unaffected, so customers can be confident that not only will their holiday go ahead as planned, but there will be no surprise extra payments,” stated Garry Wilson, CEO of EasyJet Holidays.

Ryanair’s CEO echoed this sentiment, indicating that the risk of supply disruption is receding and that no disruption is expected before the end of June. This optimism comes amidst reports that the UK is particularly vulnerable to jet fuel shortages—approximately three-quarters of Europe’s jet fuel originates from the Middle East.

In a bold move, Wizz Air has launched its largest-ever network from the UK, showcasing resilience even amid geopolitical tensions. Yvonne Moynihan, managing director of Wizz Air UK, remarked, “Despite the challenging geopolitical crisis, business goes on as usual.” This reflects a broader trend where airlines are noticing a shift in travel demand; last-minute bookings have surged as travelers seek to secure plans amidst uncertainty.

While the Department for Transport assures that airlines in the UK are not currently facing jet fuel shortages, observers remain cautious. Airports have also begun easing regulations that would allow airlines to cancel flights without losing their allocated slots should fuel scarcity occur.

The coming months are critical as travel continues to rebound post-pandemic. With airlines like Jet2 and EasyJet leading the charge, passengers can anticipate a busy summer filled with options—assuming geopolitical tensions do not escalate further.
