The partnership between Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane has emerged as a crucial element for England‘s attacking strategy, particularly evident in their recent World Cup group stage matches. Despite previous limited link-ups, their collaboration against Panama showcased a significant development in the team’s offensive capabilities.
Prior to the Panama game, data indicated that Bellingham had created only three chances for Kane across 1,154 minutes of shared pitch time in major tournaments. Their sole combined goal in an international match before this World Cup came in a 2023 friendly at Hampden Park.
Developing Attacking Synergy
In the match against Panama, England had generated 0.54 expected goals in the initial 56 minutes. This changed when Bellingham delivered a through ball that set up Kane for the team’s first significant chance. Within the subsequent 10 minutes, Bellingham won a corner, scored from it, and then assisted Kane for England’s second goal.
Bellingham’s passes against Panama registered an expected assists value of 0.57, marking the highest for any England player in a group stage game. Only Noni Madueke, with 0.66 across three games, surpassed this total. The chances Bellingham created for Kane were among the highest value opportunities any England player set up for another during the group stage.

Thomas Tuchel, the England coach, acknowledged the importance of Bellingham’s individual quality while also emphasising the need for team cohesion. He stated that Bellingham has been positive since joining the camp and fully embraces the team’s demands, bringing his individual quality to decide matches. Tuchel also highlighted the importance of players working in units to create space and increase attacking threat, noting that Bellingham is an integral part of this evolving understanding.
Challenges and Player Contributions
Despite the positive developments, concerns remain regarding England’s overall creativity and quality, with some observations suggesting an over-reliance on Bellingham’s ability to create opportunities. Tuchel has faced questions about England’s dependence on both Kane and Bellingham, who have collectively scored five of England’s six goals in the tournament so far. Bellingham has got the two most important, the strike to restore a lead against Croatia and the volley to break the deadlock against Panama. For good measure, he assisted Kane’s third of the World Cup minutes later.

Tuchel’s challenge is to ensure that moments of synergy between key players become a regular occurrence, especially as England prepares to face teams like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who are likely to employ a low defensive block. The coach also noted that other players, such as Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, are expected to contribute significantly as the tournament progresses.
Several players have made notable contributions. Rashford scored against Croatia and showed dynamism against Panama. Saka has provided two assists, including the corner that Bellingham converted. Elliot Anderson has also impressed in midfield, dictating play and adding security. However, the team’s wingers have been identified as an area needing more impact, with Rashford being described as wasteful against Panama and Saka not appearing fully fit.
England finished at the top of Group L, securing seven points from three matches without defeat. They are set to play against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday.
