Egypt accuse FIFA of ‘fix’ after controversial World Cup loss to Argentina

World Cup 2026: Reaction as Egypt accuse Fifa of 'fix' following Argentina's victory to set-up Switzerland tie

Controversial Decisions Cloud Argentina’s Victory

Egypt‘s head coach, Hossam Hassan, has strongly criticised the refereeing during his team’s dramatic 3-2 loss to Argentina in the World Cup last 16. Hassan described the officiating as “unfair” and suggested that the tournament was being “directed towards Argentina.” The reigning champions secured their quarter-final spot against Switzerland after scoring three goals in 13 minutes, avoiding a potential upset.

The match, held in Atlanta, saw several contentious moments. One key incident involved a disallowed goal for Egypt’s Zico when the score was 1-0. A VAR check determined that Lisandro Martinez had been fouled in the build-up. Egyptian football expert Ahmad Yousef highlighted the widespread disappointment in Egypt, citing inconsistencies with VAR and the criteria for reviewing decisions.

Adding to the controversy, Hassan claimed his side was denied a penalty just moments before Julian Alvarez initiated a counter-attack that led to Enzo Fernandez‘s 92nd-minute winning header. During this sequence, Alvarez tackled Mohamed Salah inside the penalty area, catching his foot before taking the ball, an incident VAR reportedly did not review. Earlier, Alexis Mac Allister was also accused of pulling Hamdi Fathy down in the box, but play continued.

Coaches and Players React to Officiating

Speaking after the game, Coach Hassan expressed his frustration, stating, “Life is unfair. The world is unfair. Okay, but why isn’t there any fairness in sports? I’m not convinced by this outcome and by the way things unfolded in this match.” He further added, “The referee is unfair, God is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. He’s wasting the effort of an entire nation. The cup is directed towards Argentina.” French referee Francois Letexier booked Hassan for protesting after Argentina’s winner, a protest that involved crossing his arms, a gesture recognised by FIFA to alert officials of racist incidents.

Hassan did not elaborate on his gesture but reiterated his belief that his team had not received “respect or fair play.” He pointed out that a penalty claim for Egypt was not checked by VAR, and their second goal was disallowed for reasons he found unclear. He also suggested that there might have been “pressure on the Argentine side on the referee that has brought about this outcome.”

Forward Zico, who scored one goal but had another disallowed, shared his mixed emotions. When asked if his tears were due to exiting the World Cup or the refereeing decisions, he responded, “Both. We were hard done by [the referee] today, and everyone saw that.” He added, “We were winning 2-0. After the 2-0 result, everything went against us and worked against us. I don’t even know why the second goal was disallowed.”

Broader Questions of Tournament Legitimacy

The controversy surrounding the Argentina vs Egypt match has raised broader questions about the legitimacy of decisions at the World Cup. The late VAR call that rescinded Egypt’s second goal, followed by a series of events favouring Argentina, has drawn significant scrutiny. One report indicated that FIFA had been approached for comment regarding the officiating.

The Egyptian coaching staff and squad are profoundly disappointed, particularly given the minimal nature of the foul that led to the disallowed goal and the significant time that had passed before the decision was made. The expert Yousef questioned whether the same consistency in decision-making would have been applied if a player like Lionel Messi were involved.

Argentina’s victory means they will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals at 2am (UK and Ireland time) on Sunday.
