Despite being directly involved in the post-match confrontation, Spain midfielder Gavi has expressed his view that Leandro Paredes should not be suspended. Gavi acknowledged that the incident did not present a positive image for younger audiences but suggested that such physicality is part of football.
Gavi stated, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He further elaborated, “I understand it’s not a good image for children but I think there’s also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive.” He suggested that the appropriate action would have been a sending-off during the match itself.
Roberto Ayala, Argentina’s assistant coach, also commented on his involvement. Ayala stated his intention was to prevent the scuffle from escalating, acknowledging he takes responsibility for his actions. He mentioned that his contact with Spain’s Dani Olmo was “more of a push than a punch” and that he intends to apologise to Olmo.
