Manchester City: Phil Foden signs new contract until 2030

Phil Foden signs Man City contract extension until at least 2030

Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030. The new agreement extends his previous deal, which was set to conclude in the summer of 2027.

The 26-year-old expressed his excitement about continuing with his boyhood club, stating that playing for Manchester City is all he has ever desired. He also acknowledged the honour of wearing the shirt and being part of a period marked by numerous titles. Foden conveyed gratitude to the club, staff, teammates, and fans for their continued faith, hoping to repay them in the years to come.

Reunion with Enzo Maresca

Foden also shared his anticipation for working again with new manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca, a former City academy manager, served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022–23 season. Guardiola departed his role at the end of last season, with Maresca being chosen as his replacement.

Foden highlighted Maresca‘s significant impact during his season with the senior squad, describing him as brilliant during the Treble season and someone respected and liked by all the players. The prospect of Maresca‘s return to the club is seen as exciting by Foden.

During Maresca‘s tenure as assistant, Foden reportedly saw a notable increase in his goal contributions. This progression continued into the 2023–24 campaign, where he recorded 19 goals and eight assists, earning him the title of Premier League Player of the Season.

Despite some recent challenges in maintaining those high performance levels, which led to speculation about a potential summer departure, Foden affirmed that leaving City was never an option for him. He has made 369 appearances and scored 110 goals for City‘s first team since his debut in a Champions League match against Feyenoord on November 21, 2017.

Club’s perspective and future

Hugo Viana, Manchester City‘s Director of Football, expressed immense pride in Foden, noting that he embodies the positive aspects of the club’s academy. Viana described Foden as a unique talent whose creativity is a pleasure to observe. He attributed Foden‘s achievements to his focus, dedication, humility, and willingness to learn from coaches and players.

Having joined City at the age of nine, Foden‘s ongoing success is celebrated across all levels of the club, from the academy staff who nurtured his development to the fans who have supported him throughout his career. Viana also mentioned that at 26, Foden‘s development is still progressing, and the club looks forward to witnessing his growth in the coming years.

In the 2025/26 season, Foden played 50 times, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists. He is among the most decorated players in the club’s history, having secured 20 major trophies. These include six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, and three Community Shields.

The new contract comes at a time when City has seen some changes, with Bernardo Silva leaving this summer and John Stones also departing. Foden‘s continued presence is seen as important, given his local roots and popularity among fans. The focus now shifts to Enzo Maresca to further develop Foden‘s potential during what could be his peak years.
