Hull City’s Strong Start and Aston Villa’s Challenge

Premier League predictions & Jones Knows' best bets: Aston Villa to end Hull's honeymoon start

Hull City’s Strong Start and Aston Villa’s Challenge

Hull City enters their upcoming match against Aston Villa having won their opening two games of the Premier League season without conceding a goal. This strong start has positioned them third in the league table. However, reports indicate that Hull has been losing the expected goals battle in both of their initial matches.

Conversely, Aston Villa, currently 19th in the league, is yet to register a shot on target this season. Since the 2003-04 season, no team has failed to record a shot on target in their first three games of a campaign. Villa also did not score in their first three games last season. The only team in top-flight history to fail to score in their first three games in consecutive seasons was Ipswich Town in 1969-70 and 1970-71.

This match marks the first encounter between Hull and Aston Villa since a 2-2 draw in the Championship in January 2019. Hull has secured only one victory in their last 16 games against Villa, drawing four and losing 11. Aston Villa has won six of their eight Premier League matches against Hull City, with Hull’s only win being a 2-0 victory in February 2015, featuring goals from Nikica Jelavic and Dame N’Doye.

Managerial Records and Team Dynamics

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has not previously faced Hull City in the Premier League. He has defeated 27 of the 28 teams he has encountered in the competition, with his only failure to win being against Ipswich, where he recorded two draws. Emery maintains an undefeated record with Villa against promoted sides, securing 15 wins and six draws.

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic could become only the fourth manager to win his first three Premier League games with a clean sheet. This achievement has previously been recorded by José Mourinho in 2004, Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2007, and Arne Slot in 2024.

Aston Villa has lost their last four Premier League matches where Ollie Watkins was not featured, with an aggregate score of 10-1. Their most recent victory without Watkins occurred on 13 November 2022, a 2-1 win at Brighton in Emery’s second game in charge.

Hull City is looking to become only the second newly promoted side to win each of their opening three games of a Premier League season, after Bolton Wanderers in 2001-02. Hull has never won their first three matches of any top-flight campaign.

The only top-four side to fail to score in their first three games of the following season was Arsenal in 1953-54.

Hull has faced the highest number of crosses among all Premier League teams this season, with 73 crosses, 21 more than any other side. Central defender John Egan leads in clearances with 27 and headed clearances with 15, while Nobel Mendy is joint-third in clearances with 17.
